It’s a Tony Starlight Christmas at Alberta Rose Theater -- 2 shows!

A Holiday Extravaganza featuring the All-Star Horns and guest vocalists Barbara Ayars and Thea Enos — 2 shows — 2 PM & 5 PM

"It's a Tony Starlight Christmas" has been a Portland holiday tradition for the last fifteen years, and this December it is being performed exclusively on the stage of Alberta Rose Theatre. Tony's Christmas show is a throwback to the classic television variety shows when legends like Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry, and Frank Sinatra sang songs and spread holiday cheer far and wide. You can’t help but feel the warmth and glow of the season. "It’s a Tony Starlight Christmas" brings back these uplifting holiday traditions and puts a fresh, comedic spin on them.

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. THE LIVE STREAM IS AVAILABLE FOR $20. PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT TONY STARLIGHT’S KENYA MUSIC MISSION.

TONY STARLIGHT’S KENYA MUSIC MISSION

In July of 2022, Mrs. Starlight and I were invited by Rev. Fred Onyango to bring the gift of music to his village in Kisumu, Kenya, and to visit nearby Huma Girls School to see the site of a water well that was funded by our church. Thanks to Prince George Winyah Parish and Water Mission International, 600 girls now have access to clean water for the first time in the school’s thirty-seven-year history!

We brought along a guitar that we presented as a gift to Emmanuel Anglican Church. It had such an amazing impact, as no one in the church could not afford a guitar. Think about that! While in Kenya, I taught a vocal performance workshop to a group of young worship leaders, played music for vacation Bible school, sang with the praise band on Sunday, and forged lifetime friendships. My phone frequently pings with “What’s App” texts from Kenya!

In July of 2023, Sherry and I returned to Kisumu, this time bringing three guitars, eleven recorders, two melodicas, twenty pitch pipes, drumsticks, microphones, and the funds to purchase a new drum set. This was all thanks to the generous contributions of Tony Starlight fans. Our Kenyan friends were over the moon with gratitude. I taught another workshop to young praise leaders, and we helped to build homes for families in extreme poverty. The experience was profoundly life-changing for so many, including us.

In 2024, we’re headed back once again. We’re asking for funds to help with our travel expenses, and to bring even more instruments. Donations can be made by check or Venmo (@tonystarlight). If you would like a tax deduction, write a check to Prince George Winyah Parish. Please be certain to write “Africa Mission” in the memo, and mail it to:

Tony Starlight, 919 Palmetto St., Georgetown, SC 29440 Thank you!

70s 8 tracks.jpg

Party like it's 1979! A soft-rockin' tribute to the greats of the AM Dial in the ‘70s.

Why Seventies Soft Rock? "The radio was the soundtrack to the 1970s, the era in which I grew up."

"Not every radio had FM capabilities, especially in cars. The AM dial was played in stores and restaurants and in the Country Squire Station Wagon that I rode in, sans seat belts. I absorbed these songs and they are a part of me. A few lines of "Rocket Man" and I'm taken back to a time of polyester, bell bottoms and Evel Knievel.

We are always shocked at how the audience seems to know all the words to every song in our playlist. To hear the crowd sing "even though we ain't got money, I'm so in love with ya honey" or "give me the beat, boys, and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock 'n' roll and drift away" is magical. I's like a big campfire sing-along, K-Tel style!" -Tony Starlight, AM Gold Seventies Soft Rock Show

What started as a monthly Neil Diamond Tribute has grown into a soft rock explosion! Tony Starlight makes an evening out of performing songs from the stalwarts of the AM dial in the 1970s. Artists like Elton John, Neil Diamond, Carole King, Jim Croce, Little River Band, Carly Simon, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, Barry Manilow and Billy Joel. One hit wonders like "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)", "Dancin' In The Moonlight", "Welcome Back", "Seasons In The Sun" and much, much more.

Frank, Dino and the Wham of Sam
"Alone Together" with the All-Star Horns & special guest Shaymus Hanlin

Join Tony Starlight, special guest vocalist Shaymus Hanlin, and an All-Star Swinging Septet as they perform the best of Frank, Dino and Sammy, all in one show. To be clear, this is Tony’s rendering of each one of these dynamic performers, with monologues from their live performances.

Tony & Shaymus will perform Rat Pack classics like:

DINO: "Ain't That A Kick In The Head", "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", "Houston", and many more.

FRANK: "Fly Me To The Moon", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Come Fly With Me", "New York, New York", and many more.

SAM: "The Goin’s Great" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I?"

In addition Tony and Shaymus will team up for some classic Rat Pack duets like “Sam’s Song”, “Guys and Dolls” and “Me and My Shadow.”

Tony renders each of the tributes with a great combination of reverence for the material and a tremendous spirit of silly fun. You're also welcome to send along requests to tonystarlight@hotmail.com and they may appear in the show!

Shaymus Hanlin is an 18-year-old vocalist from Coos Bay who recently moved to Portland to pursue music after two years of performances and competitions while still attending high school. Though he won a classical competition at age 14, he fell in love with Jazz and the music of The Great American Songbook.

Tony Starlight Vs. Jazz

Show postponed until May

Hello friends,

Due to the statewide ban on public gatherings over 250 people and to allay concerns of spreading COVID-19, we are rescheduling our next two shows at Tony Starlight Showroom:

3/14/20 - “Tony Starlight vs. Jazz”
3/21/20 - “The Great Gentlemen of Song”

The exact rescheduled dates, which are planned for May, are TBD and will be announced shortly.

If you have tickets, we will automatically transfer them to the new May date and send you new tickets. If you cannot attend that evening, you will retain a credit for use to any upcoming show at Tony Starlight Showroom. We will waive any fees associated with rescheduling.

Over the next week or two, we will know a great deal more about the health consequences and risks associated with attending our shows. I will have a much more detailed statement to make next week, announcing our rescheduled shows among other things. Until then, keep calm, wash your hands and know that I will miss you terribly.

Your regional man of mystery,
Tony

P.S. Jazz has only delayed the inevitable. This just gives me more time to train and I will lay a nasty beating on Jazz in May!

Tony vs Jazz.jpg

This is a revival of a grudge match last fought between Tony Starlight and Jazz at the legendary jazz club Jimmy Mak’s. Through music and monologue, Tony will explore the ins and outs of jazz as it is performed in nightclubs, lampooning the fans, the clubs and the players. He won’t shy away from the tough questions, like:

  • What exactly is "jazz face" and is there a cure?

  • How can this be jazz? People are listening.

  • Do I still have to clap after a bass solo?

  • Should the state require a license to "scat"?

  • Is Sinatra Jazz? How about Gershwin? How about the theme to the TV show “Bewitched’?

The second set will be a variety of Tony’s favorites from all genres.

Tony's Neil Diamond Experience Holiday Style

A multimedia live music tribute to the anointed one, Holiday Style

For the last 12 years, Tony has been performing his tribute to Neil Diamond’s iconic legacy of song. On this night Tony shall Neil before you along with a six-piece band performing a loving tribute to Neil Diamond with equal parts heart and laughter. Musically, the performance is spot on. In fact, Tony Starlight sounds so much like Diamond that fans have remarked, “it’s eerie!”

Whether it’s monologues about the lifestyle of a living legend and the burdens of carrying around such enormous talent, or challenging the audience to perform better, or an all-new take on “You Don’t Bring me Flowers”, no other Diamond tribute is this much fun. And we guarantee it’s the only tribute with simulated figure skating! Here’s the kicker: Even people who don’t like Neil Diamond, like this show! You know what you call people who don’t like Neil Diamond, don’t ya? LIARS!

TONY STARLIGHT USES LIVE MUSICIANS ONLY. What you hear is us. There are no backing “tracks” on this, or any other show at Tony Starlight Showroom.

It’s a Tony Starlight Christmas at Revolution Hall!

It’s a Tony Starlight Christmas at Revolution Hall!

A Holiday Extravaganza at Revolution Hall, Featuring the All-Star Horns!

Tony Starlight's Christmas shows are a Portland holiday tradition. Since the first show in 1994 at the Space Room, to the series of sold out shows he performs at Tony Starlight Showroom each December, Tony and cast have been uplifting spirits with a show that is both silly and sweet.

For this 25th Anniversary year, Tony wanted to do something on a much grander scale. This bigger and brighter show needed a venue like Revolution Hall to contain it. Tony's Christmas show is a throwback to the classic TV variety shows. Through music, comedic monologues and sketches, Tony embodies the spirit of Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Neil Diamond. Holiday favorites with new lyrics designed to skewer Millennial culture (and the Gen Xers that unwittingly created it!) Impressions of beloved characters from The Rankin & Bass Christmas specials like Jimmy Durante from Frosty The Snowman and more.

After 25 years of Christmas shows, this marks the first time the show will be performed with the All-Star Horns. Long-time fans of Tony's show will be happy to hear their favorite routines performed by this amazing band AND to hear many new songs and routines, designed especially for this one-time performance at Revolution Hall, including a set of Cowboy Christmas Classics from Tony’s newest project, Tony Starlight & The Starlight Ranch Hands.

The Cast

No one loves Christmas more than Tony Starlight! For over two decades, Tony has been bringing his unique brand of holiday spirit to Portland and beyond in his Vegas-style holiday show, packed full of music, impressions, comedy, and good feelings.
