“WE ARE ONE IN THE SPIRIT, WE ARE ONE IN THE LORD”
As much as I love to sing Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Billy Idol, some songs have been with me much longer. As a beginning guitarist I struggled to play “They’ll Know We Are Christians” in 1986 at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Bozeman, MT. And forget about singing and playing at the same time! In fact, it was there and then as a part of our church’s 9 am folk choir that I learned to play guitar, period.
For this special solo concert, I'll revisit these musical roots by singing a few of the "church songs" that began my career of public performance. I’ll recount the path that has led me from Bozeman to Kenya; from learning to play the bass in the Prince George Winyah Parish 9 am praise band at fifty years old, to teaching these same songs to my young music students in South Carolina, some as young as two!
I'll also perform the secular songs that have had a deep impact on my life and faith by artists such as Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, U2, Bob Dylan, and many more. Through song and story, I’ll recount the leap of faith that led Sherry and I to move across the country and to return to attending church after thirty years away. (I'm entertaining the idea of playing that beautiful grand piano that sits on the stage of Canby Pioneer Chapel. I've never played piano publicly. Catch my debut!)
It is very fitting to do this show in Canby, where my step father John Eide served as pastor at Macksburg Lutheran Church for many years. Come early and grab a pew!
General admission seating. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The show will run from 7:30 to 9:00 without an intermission. Concessions available for purchase.
