Thursday September 9
Pete Petersen Septet

7:30pm $8

The Guest Artist Series: Featuring Tahoe Jackson

The Pete Petersen Septet presents the Guest Artist Series, a monthly series featuring established vocalists from around the area across various genres. This month's featured vocalist will be the ever-soulful Ms Tahoe Jackson. Miss Tahoe Jackson originally hails from a musical family in the Bay Area. Many have compared Miss Jackson's voice to the plaintive growl of Etta James mixed with the majestic grace of Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Known mostly for her powerhouse vocals and brash stage persona, Tahoe is currently writing songs for a solo project, tentatively titled "The Love Bully Diaries."

About this Series: While the Septet's roots are steeped firmly in the jazz idiom, one purpose of this series is to deliberately shatter the boundaries between jazz, blues, and other styles. Rather than promote this series using specific labels like "jazz", "blues", "R&B", etc, the concept of this series can be summed up in one simple sentence: This is what happens when good musicians get together to play good music. Prominent established Pacific Northwest vocalists who regularly perform at the highest level of musicianship with their own band(s) will be featured in front of an all-star ensemble of top-level professional musicians from the Portland area. Guest Artist performances will feature their own signature songs as well as new material written specifically for each performance, and fresh treatments of jazz and pop standards, all backed by a powerhouse "Little Big Band" consisting of some of the area's finest players. Many of the band's regular members are also bandleaders in their own right, and all of them are veterans of national or international touring acts. This truly is, at its core, good music performed by good musicians.

Another purpose of this series is to expose younger audiences to live music. Every current generation of musicians and performers owes their knowledge and skill to the fact that they were able to see and hear live performances during their formative younger years. The tradition of performing live music in front of audiences has been passed down from each generation to the next since the first caveman banged out the first rhythm on the first rock. However, since many of these performances nowadays take place in bars and nightclubs, that passing down of tradition almost didn't happen for this current generation of young music students due to the increasingly strict laws surrounding minors and alcohol. But now, thanks to a hard-fought political battle by local area musicians and venues (which was spearheaded in large part by the Musicians' Union local 99), the OLCC is now allowing minors to attend live music performances at certain venues during certain hours on certain nights. As a result of this change, we are pleased to be able to announce that the entire first set of this performance from 7:30pm to 9:00pm is open to All Ages! The primary reason this series is taking place on Thursdays instead of weekend nights is because Thursdays are one of the nights during the week when this venue is open to minors.

Minors permitted Sunday - Thursday until 9:30pm.

The Stolen Sweets

8:00pm $12

Without a doubt this is Portland's finest vocal harmony trio. The Stolen Sweets was formed in 2004 with the intention of reviving the songs of 1930s sister act, The Boswell Sisters. Comprised of vocalists Jen Bernard, Lara Michell and Erin Sutherland, guitarists Pete Krebs and David Langenes (both of whom sing) and double bass player Keith Brush, The Sweets' repertoire has expanded to include material from the 1920s -1940s. Their arrangements are still inspired by the Boswells' tight 3-part harmonies, frequent tempo changes and "knowing shrugs and raised eyebrows," as noted by the Oregonian's A&E. In March of 2008, the Sweets took their maiden voyage to Europe, performing their unique brand of vintage jazz in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany and Slovenia. A wonderful time was had by all, and they can't wait to return. Come see them before they head out of the country again!

Sportin' Lifers

7:30pm $7

Tony Starlight's gets the Blues when the Sportin' Lifers come 'round. (In the swingin'-est way of course.) There was a time when the Blues didn't mean screaming guitars and crashing drums, but swinging rhythms, urbane lyrics and tasteful musicianship. The Sportin' Lifers harken back to the 40s and 50s jump era when names such as Johnny Otis, Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, and Slim Gaillard were heard up and down the West Coast, while Paul Gayten, Professor Longhair, and scores of others held forth in The Crescent City. Blues for grownups.

Led by Steve Morelli and his partner in time, drummer Fred Ingram, the Lifers have rounded up a cast of questionable characters whose only mission in life appears to be to swing. The rest of the band includes pianist Steve "Thousand Dollar" Cleveland, sax man Brad Ulrich and guitarist Whit Draper.

Come hear the Blues go uptown at the Supper Club!
