Ruthann de la Vega -The Empress turns 80
Proceeds to benefit Molly’s Fund
One of Tony’s favorite cabaret singers turns 80 and we are celebrating! Hosted by Tony Starlight, with special guest David Saffert as Liberace, plus other guests.
Ruthann de la Vega is a native of Grants Pass who has sung professionally in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Hawaii and much more. She also appeared in west coast productions of many Broadway musicals including Fiddler on the Roof, Pajama Game, Oklahoma to name a few. Her life in music has led her to work with some very illustrious people in show business, from her childhood friend Suzanne Burce (who changed her name to Jane Powell and became a big star) and studied singing Lillian Rosedale Goodman at the same time as Gordon MacRae (the star of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel.) Through story and song Ruthann will take us through 80 years, 75 of which have been spent in music.
The event is a benefit for Molly’s Fund, a non-profit organization whose mission is to EDUCATE the public and to INFORM the medical community about lupus, to ADVOCATE for earlier life-saving diagnoses, to SUPPORT people living with lupus and to COLLABORATE with government and foundations to fund research toward a cure. Learn more about Molly’s Fund here.
Ruthann lost her daughter Kandi Clark in 2005 to Lupus and all contributions to Molly’s Fund will be in her memory.
David Saffert as Liberace: David, like Liberace, is a classically trained pianist from Wisconsin. His mission is to give audiences the ultimate Liberace experience. From elaborate costumes to painstakingly researched piano transcriptions, David hones in on Liberace’s piano playing, speech, and mannerisms, to deliver the most honest portrayal of “Mr. Showmanship.”
Barbara Ayars: Barbara has been performing before audiences most of her life, either as a soloist or background vocalist. While earning her degree in music at Arizona State University, she was a frequent lead in Broadway musical productions and operas. In Las Vegas, Barbara provided background vocals for Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Diahann Carroll, Donna Fargo, Esquivel, Bobby Vinton, and Mary MacGregor. Barbara has appeared on “The Tonight Show”, “The Merv Griffin Show”, and “The Dinah Shore Show”.
Ruthann is also joined by some of her newly minted friends from the world of Portland piano bars, Jeff Reger and Dirk Foley, who will join the Empress on stage for some antics.
