Dean Martin 100th Birthday Tribute
Starring Tony Starlight & special guests Marianna Thielen, Barbara Ayars, Jillian Snow Harris and David Saffert
Dino Paul Crocetti was born June 7, 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio. The world knew him as Dean Martin, the “King of Cool”, one of the most popular, most charming and funniest entertainers of the 20th century. We plan to celebrate Dino’s 100th birthday in style!
The first set will be a tribute to his famous top-rated NBC variety television show, complete with songs, comedy routines and special guest stars. We’ll be joined by Liberace, Liza Minnelli, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and more!
The short second set is a tribute to Dino’s legendary Vegas nightclub act performed first at the Sands Hotel, and then later a long residency at the MGM Grand. This set will include his classic song parodies and horribly out-dated and corny jokes.
WARNING: THIS SHOW CONTAINS OUTDATED JOKES ABOUT BOOZE AND BROADS!
BARBARA AYARS has been performing before audiences most of her life, either as a soloist or background vocalist. While earning her degree in music at Arizona State University, she was a frequent lead in Broadway musical productions and operas. While in Las Vegas she was sought after as both a lead singer and vocalist for several revues, including the award-winning “A Bare Touch of Vegas”. She provided background vocals for Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme at Caesar’s Palace, Diahann Carroll at the Dunes, and Donna Fargo at the Sahara, and was a featured soloist with pianist Esquivel. Barbara toured with both Bobby Vinton and Mary MacGregor, and appeared on “The Tonight Show”, “The Merv Griffin Show”, and “The Dinah Shore Show”. In Portland Barbara founded the female vocal group, Signatures, and performs regularly in various Tony Starlight’s shows. She appears with her husband, Bo, and bassist, Dennis Caiazza, in BBD3, a classic pop/jazz trio. She teaches a Vocal Performance Workshop for adults, and provides a showcase bi-monthly for her students.
MARIANNA THIELEN is a Portland, OR based songwriter, vocalist, band leader, and percussionist. She holds a degree in Musical Theatre with a voice emphasis from the University of Northern Colorado. Her band, The Bylines, is at the center of her artistic and professional endeavors. Formed with her husband and pianist, Reece Marshburn, the band plays concerts, works at local wine bars and hotels, and entertains at fundraisers. It has taken her to play in New York City, Los Angeles, and onboard the Star Clipper in Venice, Italy. She was one of 16 songwriters from across the nation selected for the Johnny Mercer’s Songwriting Project in 2011. The Bylines have recorded two albums and produce theatrical concerts of their work in and around Portland. Most recently, they wrote music and lyrics for an original retelling of Sleeping Beauty with Northwest Children’s Theatre and are currently working on a show for their next season.
JILLIAN SNOW HARRIS is a singer and actor who graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. She has worked predominately in comedy, gracing the stages of Gotham Comedy Club, the Laugh Factory, and Comix NYC as a Liza Minnelli impersonator. After seeing her perform, Michael Musto of the Village Voice said, “This could open up Minnelli to a whole new audience!” Jillian temporarily hung up the Liza wig when she was offered the part of Janis Joplin in the Off-Broadway production of 27 Heaven. Soon after, her love for portraying those for whom she idolized became a fruitful and fulfilling venture. Eventually, Jillian fled New York so she could get some sleep and found exile in Portland, Oregon. She was recently featured in the U.S. Premiers of “Liza, Liza, Liza,” “A Liberace & Liza Christmas,” and is currently a featured guest at Tony Starlight’s Showroom portraying not only Liza, but also Bernadette Peters, Eartha Kitt, and Judy Garland.
DAVID SAFFERT, like Liberace, is a classically trained pianist from Wisconsin. What started out as a stunt has turned into a passionate display of music and entertainment. David’s mission is to give audiences the ultimate Liberace experience. From elaborate costumes to painstakingly researched piano transcriptions, David hones in on Liberace’s piano playing, speech, and mannerisms, to deliver the most honest portrayal of “Mr. Showmanship.” As Liberace, David has performed at Tony Starlight’s Showroom, Curious Comedy Theater, Portland Art Museum, Theatre Vertigo, University of Wisconsin-Superior, Coho Theater (“A Liberace & Liza Christmas”), and on Late Night Action w/ Alex Falcone. He maintains a marvelous partnership with ALL CLASSICAL PORTLAND and has been featured on live broadcasts of Robert McBride’s “Thursday’s @ 3.”
