For 20 years, Jimmy Makarounis owned and operated Jimmy Mak’s, Portland’s most renowned jazz music venue. Jimmy passed away on January, 2017 after a battle with cancer. Friends, family, and colleagues of Jimmy have worked with Portland State University to set up a music scholarship in honor of Jimmy and his immeasurable contribution to live music in Portland.
A special thanks goes out to those who came to Musical Inspiration: Honoring Jimmy Mak memorial concert at the Roseland Theater. Your tickets sales made it possible for us to send a check for $4067 to the PSU Foundation for a musical scholarship in Jimmy’s name. Add that to the $3000 we got for Diane Russell’s “A Night at Jimmy Mak’s” autographed print, and generous contributions from Eric and Patty Weber, Bob Hui, Mert Meeker, Rob Maletis, Nick Coury, Jim Crystal and Pacific Office Automation and we have raised over $17,000 thus far!
That will ensure a scholarship in Jimmy’s name, but our goal is for an endowed scholarship that will live on in perpetuity. For that we need $50,000. So we’ve made a good start. Stay tuned for more events between now and the end of the year that will provide more opportunities to raise these funds.
